Planning for Long-Term Care as a Family Caregiver

October 31, 2024 Caregivers, Family

The role of a family caregiver comes with both rewards and challenges. Without access to proper support and resources, the responsibility of caring for a loved one who is aging with illness can be overwhelming. According to the national survey, “Caregiving in the U.S. 2020,” 41.8 million individuals are providing care to family members aged 50 and older. Of these caregivers, 26% report facing difficulties in managing care coordination. As older adults find themselves planning for long-term care, they are often faced with a series of difficult decisions on suitable care options. Whether they choose to continue receiving care at home or start searching for the best senior living community, these choices can be overwhelming.

Finding Support at a Senior Living Community: Ron and Jan’s Story

For Ron and Jan Gigl, the decision to move to a continuing care retirement community was a decision made not just for their future together, but also for their individual health and well-being. When Ron was suddenly diagnosed with vascular dementia, the Gigls’ children encouraged them to start planning for long-term care. After researching senior living options, Ron and Jan toured Brethren Village in Lititz, PA and knew it was the perfect place to call home.

After their move in 2021, the Gigls enjoyed the newfound freedoms of independent living. For Jan, that was becoming a volunteer at the Brethren Village Thrift Shop and socializing with new friends on campus. For Ron, it was attending Men’s Second Cup, a Resident run discussion group, and taking walks throughout campus.

As Ron’s diagnosis progressed, Jan took on more responsibilities as his full-time caregiver. This change brought more physical and emotional tiredness and a new understanding of dementia. “I had to learn that it is not Ron, but the disease of dementia causing certain situations,” Jan said.

After speaking with her Social Worker, Jan learned about an adult day care program that Ron was eligible for. Though hesitant, Ron began attending twice a week and eventually increased to three times a week. Quickly, he fell in love with the activities, discussions, and trips he was able to participate in. Ron has found a place where he feels a sense of belonging and Jan enjoys watching him thrive, knowing that planning for long-term care brought them to Brethren Village.

“I love the people and support here at BV,” Jan said. “I know they care about me, and you don’t always get that everywhere.”

When Jan had to stay in the hospital for a few days, Ron was able to stay in Respite Care, a Brethren Village resource for caregivers needing rest or recharge. While Jan recovered, Ron was encouraged to put a puzzle together by one of the staff. Today, Ron can be found completing a puzzle every two weeks.

Caregiver Advice: Navigating Dementia and Community Resources

For other family caregivers supporting a loved one through illness, Jan offers this piece of advice: “Some days will be good, and some will be bad, but you have to remember it’s the disease. It can be hard, but you must hang in there.” With Ron supported at the day care program, Jan can explore new passions both on and off campus, all while enjoying peace of mind.

While navigating the daily struggles of caregiving and her own challenges, Jan finds comfort in knowing she is not alone. The sense of connection and understanding within her community helps her face each day with resilience and hope. “I have all I need here,” Jan said. “If we were still at home, I don’t know if I would be able to do caregiving like I do it here.”
